So recently my brother sent me a text making me aware of Kentucky Fried Chicken’s newest creation- the Double Down. If you haven’t already heard, this new “sandwich” is made of two fried chicken patties for the buns, with the center filled with cheese and bacon.

Some websites have boasted it as a “protein packed powerhouse”. However, this “powerhouse” contains 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and 1380 grams of sodium. But don’t worry health conscious KFC fans, there is a grilled version as well! That version has 460 calories, 23 grams of fat, and 1430 grams of heart-unhealthy sodium. So ok, it’s not as bad as some of its fast-food counter parts like the Thickburgers and other calorie containing monsters, but I’m still not sure what the benefits of this new sandwich is. Especially after KFC had seemingly become a little more health conscious with their grilled chicken options and lower calorie meals. For example, one of those grilled chicken dinners containing a grilled chicken breast, mashed potatoes (without gravy), green beans, and a biscuit contains about the same amount of calories as the grilled Double Down (470 kcal) and almost half the fat of the regular version (17 grams). And doesn’t it look so much more appealing?

*Picture shows leg and thigh, and gravy with potatoes, but similar calorie amounts.
So I guess the moral of this blog is: even if you’re trying to cut the carbs out of your meal, you can still do it in a lower fat and heart healthier way- and even include some veggies!
